In junior high, Vi may have been a nerdy outcast, but now that she’s a freshman, things are going to be different. It has to be, or she’ll end up nothing more than a memory. Thanks to ancient magical mumbo-jumbo, Gracewood’s students can absorb the strength, smarts, and memories of any student whose ID they get a hold of, leaving the absorbee just a wee bit dead. Upperclassmen roam the school as gods, armed with enough speed to catch a bullet while texting and enough intelligence to make graduate-level math problems look like a Leap Frog learning exercise. Underclassmen are their unwilling prey, only safe from each other, and in certain parts of the school.
After she nearly dies at the hands of some sophomores, Vi’s flapping mouth lands her a friendship with a senior named Allison. As her friendship with Allison grows, Vi finds herself changing, hiding everything about herself in order to keep in line with the cool kids. She begins to wonder whether she and her newfound BFF Allison are really friends at all, or if BFF stands for Big Freaking Faker. Soon danger begins stacking up at every corner, whether it’s other students, the masked prowler rumored to haunt the halls, or the horrors of standardized tests. Vi realizes that truly surviving high school may cost her the things she desires most: being popular, being herself, and being alive (in that order).
My name is Alex Langley, and I am the author of Amazon best-seller The Geek Handbook: Practical Skills and Advice for the Likable Modern Geek and its upcoming follow-up, Geek Lust, both by Krause Publications. I write news, interviews, and comics for the websites Arcadesushi.com, Fan Voice, and Nerdspan.com, have over 20,000 followers on twitter, and edit content for geek girl/web celebrity @ActionChick Katrina Hill at Actionflickchick.com. Thousands follow my work online, and I have been a speaker on panels at conventions such as Wonder-Con and San Diego Comic-Con International. My published works also include academic papers.
I have teamed up with artists Marko Head, Greg Fischer, and Nick Langley to bring you my graphic novel, Kill the Freshman, a young adult fantasy title that’s one part Highlander and two parts Mean Girls. I’ve written both fiction and non-fiction novels before, but I believe that a comic book/graphic novel is the best way to tell the colorful, high-energy story of Kill the Freshman. I’m a lifelong fan of stories with strong female leads, such as Gunnerkrigg Court, Lost Girl, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Friends with Boys, and I’m excited at the prospect of getting to contribute my own story alongside such awesome tales.
Kill the Freshman is a graphic novel split into three volumes of approximately one-hundred ten full color pages apiece, with potential for future installments. I am the writer and creator of this property, and Marko Head, Greg Fischer, and Nick Langley are my artistic team.
