This is a short spoiler-free review of the movie “The Lego Movie.” I’m not sure if this movie started out as just an advertising ploy to get people to use buy more Legos, but whatever the reason, the film is AWESOME. Advertising ploy or not, I’m almost 100 percent certain that Lego will be selling a lot more Lego toys because of this movie (whether it will be adults buying Legos for themselves or for their kids is another issue entirely).
“The Lego Movie” has a lot of humor for kids, but it also has lots of humor that kids are too young to get. I took my 9 year-old niece to see “The Lego Movie” and she loved it. The theater was full with kids–as it should be for a kid’s movie–and they all seemed to be enjoying it. While the film reaches its target audience, it’s also reaching adults because I would go again if I had more little relatives to take–or maybe just friends. To be honest, I think I liked the movie more than my niece because of the humor that was aimed at older generations and which she didn’t notice.
There are several famous people doing voice acting for this film, including Morgan Freeman as Vitruvius and Will Ferrell as Lord Business. Other character voices were provided by Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Will Arnett, Billy Dee Williams, Jonah Hill, and Liam Neeson.
The movie has its sad moments, hysterical moments, and epic moments, but it also has what a movie based on Legos should have: A moment to inspire people’s imaginations–even the imaginations of the folks supposedly too old to play with toys.
