What will Tomorrowland Be?
Finally! After scores of teasers, and being extremely mysterious for about 2 years- On October 9th Disney released a trailer for Tomorrowland. Even with the trailer, this piece is all speculation. I have deduced from my vast knowledge of Damon Lindelof, my love for Disney and all things nerdy I have come up with this pre-review of the film. Call it the review of the preview.
I thought the film was going to be about Disneyland’s Tomorrowland -with gold rockets and what the 50’s thought the future day was going to be about… I pictured a cheesy space family like the Jetsons and hoped and prayed it wasn’t going to be as campy as the Eddie Murphy “Haunted Mansion” movie. (For the record, that movie wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t as good as a Guillermo del Toro Haunted Mansion movie.) Who knows? Some of that retro-space still might be in this current film. The Tomorrowland of Disneyland seems to have its spirit in it, but the film isn’t directly about the land itself.
The screenplay was by Brad Bird (Ratatouille, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) and Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek: Into Darkness) so, I am pretty sure the typical family dynamic is gone and also, time travel will probably involved.
Tomorrowland- had been originally titled “1952” and no talk from Bird or Lindelof when it had this title. At the 2013 D23 Convention (Disney’s Convention), the Tomorrowland panel involved Bird and Lindelof teasing the movie through a series of props from the 1950’s and releasing this synopsis:
“Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as Tomorrowland.”
Originally, the movie was set to be released on December 12, 2014. But due to editing issues it is now slated for a May 22, 2015 release.
After knowing this, and then seeing the trailer, Tomorrowland doesn’t seem to be what I was expecting. The heroine “an optimistic, scientific teenage girl” seems gutsy and smart- but I don’t foresee a guy crazy young lady (I guess that all goes out the window if George Clooney is your partner in adventures).
This is the best part about the whole dang thing. Damon Lindelof being a huge fan of Phineas and Ferb, from the outside I picture a parallel to Isabella- the campfire girl. I love this idea. It hasn’t quite happened yet since Hermione.
I don’t know if there is going to be any teenage angst, there doesn’t seem to be. Nor does this feel like another dystopian society, young adult movie.
There seems to be adventure in the soul of Tomorrowland and dimensions and time travel and all kinds of cool things we are going to devour.
Your guess is as good as mine, but I think this Tomorrowland is going to be something we haven’t seen yet.
George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are in it, so I speculate with all the information I have received- this is going to be a pretty good movie. The Spring of 2015 got a little brighter.
